✈️ Flights become more sustainable

How Shell is using the Blockchain for sustainable aviation fuel

GM, GM!

You know how we break down the Web3 use cases every week in 4.3 minutes:

  • 😰 The challenge

  • 💡 The solution

  • 👀 Take away for other industries

Shell is committed to sustainability.

Yes, this is true!

I know, speaking of the oil behemoth and sustainability at the same time does not sound real. But here me out…

😰 The challenge

A Boeing 757-200 burns about 35,000 liters of kerosene on its way from Germany to New York. That's about 736 kg of CO2 per person, or the equivalent of 🍔 263 hamburgers.

Of course, we need to reduce the number of flights overall, use alternative modes of transportation, or travel less. But some flights are simply necessary and cannot be eliminated.

If you want to tackle the climate crisis, something has to happen in the airline industry.

💡 The solution

And things are happening!

For example, Shell is working on SAF - Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

SAF is a fully industrialized fuel made from alternative raw materials to crude oil. Depending on the blend with standard jet fuel, its use can save between 40-80% of CO2 emissions.

But wait, where's the blockchain?

Glad you asked.

Shell, Accenture, American Express and energy web have teamed up to bring the Avelia platform to life.

Avelia is a solution for booking and billing sustainable aviation fuel. The platform connects airlines and companies around the world to share the environmental benefits of SAF.

Using blockchain, Avelia provides clear and transparent tracking of the environmental attributes of SAF delivered to the aviation fueling network. And of course having energy web as partner, they are using their infrastructure.

The journey is tracked from production to entry into the fuel network. This gives customers confidence in the source of the data provided. Environmental attributes can be assigned to both airlines and corporate customers, avoiding issues such as double counting.

The platform aims to build confidence in sustainable aviation.

👀 Take away for other industries

As shown in other use cases, blockchain can be helpful in the area of ESG reporting. Blockchain is the technology for trust. The technology can help, but it doesn't have to.

More important are the real innovations to reduce the carbon footprint.

So first reduce your company's footprint, and then put the data on the blockchain where it makes sense.

Speaking of sustainability:
My family and I are vacationing within our country this year. Unfortunately, the train service is not so good, so we take the car. With kids, you have to stop all the time.
I wonder if I need to compensate for the constant starting and accelerating separately... 🤔

Maybe it's vacation time for you too, so enjoy the sun and nature! ☀️

See you next week,

Oh wait, I have one more request:
